What's the best way to prepare for a Duke of Edinburgh expedition?

I have mine on saturday, sunday and monday.
I don't know whether to rest and relax while I still can, or spend time walking to get used to it.
If you don't know what D of E is, you go on a walking expedition, where you walk with maps for about 7 hours a day, 3 days, and camp for 2 nights. With all your stuff in a very heavy rucksack. :)

If you have bought new boots, I suggest you wear them round the house and on short walks to wear them in gradually and avoid getting blisters.

If your expedition if this Saturday and you still haven't done any traing yet - it is too late now. Just relax and I am sure it will be fine.

In the meantime, you should practise you map reading, and try to get really familiar with you planned route. this will help you not to get lost, and prevent you from walking round in circles with that heavy rucksack.

Also, pack your rucksack now. Try putting things in different positions to see which is most confortable for you. Normally heavy things should go at the bottom close to you back. Plan well what you are going to take. Set out everything in front of you, then try and chose things that are either non essential, or could be scaled down to recuce wieght. 10 km in, every gram will count.

For example if you are taking a towel, you could chose a smaller or an old threadbare one that weighs less, or take one of those lightwieght backpacking towels they sell in outdoor shops.

If at anypoint on Saturday you will be passing through towns, or villages, you could find out now if they have shops - and top up your supplies there to reduce weight the first day (if this is allowed?).

Check you route for springs, drinking fountains or houses where you could top your water up. If there are several, you won't need to carry so much water at any one time.

What other things could you go without? Cut down, and cut down again.
