How to read a map and compass when walking in the country!

How to read a map and compass
Donâ € ™ t get lost! Read a map!

Navigating using a map

If youâ € ™ re recreational walker, rambler, encoder or hiker who enjoys the challenge of climb a mountain or two before breakfast, learning to read a map is vital for navigation in the field when might not necessarily be signs saying â € ~ Pub 200 yards € ™. Instead, it is important to learn the characteristics of the earth around and see how it reflects on the map in front of you to help to start. Learning to use a map can even save your life.

Getting to the map

It sounds like obvious advice, but I really have a good look to information provided in this piece of paper before â € "youâ € ™ ll be surprised as to amount of information that exists really! Hereâ € ™ s starting point:

Key / Symbols / Legend â € "learn to recognize the difference between the points of reference shown on the map and, specifically, the route your taking.
Map scale â € "Know the scale so that the eye can see until about him on foot, so you can plan your breaks, etc.
Grid Reference â € "understanding the system map network reference and mark key points, and could be a good starting point to provide distances at a glance.
Height / Relief â € "Knowing the altitude, and learn to detect the use of the contours of the map when relief lowland or goes too fast for you to easily follow a particular route. The contours can also be used as navigation reference points and can help to map 2-dimensional 3-dimensional in your mind.
Compass â € "make sure your Compass is working before you leave, and who knows how to use it! Recommendations are made below.

Map Scale

Imagine a map as a birds-eye view of the earth, but a scaled-down version. They are a small scale in a way that captures a large enough area to plan their route, but at a level of detail that helps detect landmarks. Walkers often use a map with a scale of 1:25,000, which means that 1 cm on the map represents 250 meters. Other maps can be 1:40,000, 1:50,000, or much smaller but more popular 1:25.000.

Distance

The first time that the planning Route is important to know the comfortable distance that you can walk to different gradients of the hills.

And a walk suggests that a good measure the distance of the hike is along the route with a piece of string, carefully stretches across the map. This piece of rope can be placed next to the scale map ™ € s in the margin to calculate the distance. Maps often have a grid laid over the map for which each square represents a set distance (a map is 1:25,000 OS 1 km).

Using a compass

Depending on where you're walking, it depends on if necessary for you to use a compass. For example, if you follow a river to reach out notably a bridge after about 2 miles, then you might need a compass, but if you walking in a network of rivers and streams and then walk and a ride I would advise that one. This idea could be transferred to a host of other scenarios where walking with a map and compass to be better advised.

Even following a well marked trail may sound easy, but snow or rain may have damaged the road and makes it less clear for walking. Using a map and compass together will help to continue its path with more care and offers an alternative in case you lose your way to a path well marked.

Walk and Ramble suggest that before embarking on the road, always make sure you are confident with using a compass and map, perhaps by the practice field in an area you know well.

1. Align the map in the direction you are facing so that the features in the map match the land check â € "with a friend to see you agree.
2. Checking the direction of the route using landmarks or the completion of the unique features surrounding the area.
3. Traveling on a compass requires a walker to walk at a particular angle to the North, by the rotation box around the needle of the compass until the orienteering arrow (under the needle) North, points on your map. Use the North-South grid lines on the map to help, but remember that sometimes paths bend in different directions so that I remember is having to revise whenever necessary.
4. Using maps guides adjust the compass housing to accommodate differences in the network North and magnetic North â € "see each map for details.
5. Remove the compass on the map, make sure the needle points in the same direction as the orientation arrow, and walk in this direction. Easy!
6. Walk and Ramble recommend controls using common sense to ensure that you are walking in the right direction and double check bearings every time you take a turn.

Remember to measure the bearing from grid north on the map to your destination. This could also adjust this value in view of the network changes from north to north magnetic compass.

Be careful

Be aware of what is beyond your map, where roads and telephones nearby in case of an emergency. Look at the land surrounding his way to see if access to the route will be difficult after heavy rain, snowfall or adverse conditions in general. It may be that a river has flooded, there has been a major snow drift that Hasna € ™ t cast, or the rocks have fallen. Donâ € ™ t take shortcuts. Choosing the roads. Respect for local plants, wildlife and agriculture. And above all â € "have a great time!

Last minute checks

And as stated in the Scouting motto â € "be prepared! Itâ € ™ s much easier to get lost while walking in the to think about. People donâ € ™ t plan to miss, but it happens too often, every day!
Remember to bring a waterproof jacket and a liner fleece or insulating jacket packed in his backpack â € "even if itâ € ™ s not raining or cold. Climate of the United Kingdom invariably changes too fast € Â "so make sure your heart ™ € re prepared for it!

Are you using the right walking boots, hiking poles using the right and take enough water and food in your backpack? Check out the walk and Ramble website for more tips and ideas on how to enjoy walking and hiking in the countryside. By all means, take the ride and equipment Ramble a call for more information on what you need up 01925 244 434 or feel free to email us for any further advice in relation to walking and hiking.

Maps and compass are vital outdoor equipment and know how to use them, along with the rest of your foot clothing and equipment.

And a walk have given this advice, hoping to encourage people to learn to use a map and in good faith that people use a variety of sources to assist their learning in reading maps - no responsibility is taken by the misuse or misinterpretation of this information.
