Is your pet a pig?
Humans are not the only species suffering an obesity epidemic in parts of the world. Our pets also are pampered fat, with some estimates putting the level of obesity in dogs and cats to be around 25%. It is accepted that being clinically obese can lead to medical problems in humans, and this is also true for our pets. Arthritis, heart disease, bladder problems and diabetes are just some of the ailments our pets can suffer if they are predisposed to her by her weight problem. Furthermore, obese pets experience fatigue, exercise intolerance and intolerance heat leads to poor overall quality of life.
Too often pet owners will be overweight overweight. For dogs, this stems from 3 probabilities:
1. The owner is relatively inactive and unable to walk the dog as much as it should, burning fewer calories.
2. The owner regularly eat throughout the day, which means the dog is often more demanding candy and probably getting them.
3. The owner has a misguided view it who are overweight and what is healthy and what constitutes an appropriate portion sizes for dogs body weight.
For cats, the situation is a bit different because you can not walk like dogs can burn calories. Naturally, the cats spend more time indoors are becoming less exercise than those who spend most of their time outdoors, and so are more likely to be obese. These last 2 probabilities above also apply to cats though.
In the experience of the authors, a reasoned attempt by the owner to lose weight often match the pet's weight loss too. As humans, pets can not make fat or muscle from nothing and thus for indoor cats and dogs have full control over their body condition of animals company.
How can I tell if my pet is overweight?
There is no set of rules of what is overweight and the variation so there is both between and within races. As a rule, you should be able to easily feel your pets ribs gently stroking the chest with a range of his hand. It should also be able to feel only the tips of protruding vertebrae (dorsal spines) along the spine of his movement as the pet him from head to tail. If not palpable, then your pet is likely to be obese.
All pets must be weighed regularly. This can be difficult to achieve at home, but a rough guide to your pets weight can be obtained by weighed on some bathroom scales, weighed after while bringing your pet and subtracting one another. This can be difficult for large dogs, heavy and inaccurate for small dogs and cats in small fluctuations may be more significant. To monitor your pets weight means you can:
a) a more precise dose of drugs, such as fleas and the prevention of antiparasitic drugs.
b) Indicate whether weight gain are more accurate, as change is rarely observed, if you notice that animal on a daily basis and not intervals.
c) Indicate if they are losing weight, which is a common factor in many disease processes.
If the choice of bathroom scales is not feasible, drop by your local veterinary clinic and ask if you can the weight of your pet on their scales. You will be amazed at your conscience!
Killing your pet with affection
For many animals the highlight of the day is lunch. Of course, if your pet has just weeks of life due to, for example, an inoperable tumor, then it would be convenient to feed him / her whatever their favorite food is that no long-term to suffer long-term consequences. However, for most people, feeding an appropriate amount of a healthy diet will be greeted as enthusiastically as the wolverine portions of your pet can be used to, just need a little motivation and discipline owner to get to that point.
Therefore, these diseases are that animals suffer real fat or are they just scare stories? In fact, they are real and possibly imminent for your pet. Lets have a closer look at some diseases and problems of farm animals can suffer as a direct consequence of obesity:
1. Heart disease. The more bigger, the harder your heart has to work to pump blood throughout the body. Pets very obese have a higher rate than normal heart and increased heart no reserve capacity, which means they get out of breath very easily and regularly pants after minimal physical effort. Losing some weight has a great tension out of the heart.
2. Arthritis. Imagine carry a large backpack full of stones wherever he went. After some time pressure on his joints begin to count. Many pets arthritis at a certain age anyway, for obese pets are more likely to occur delay and the severity of the disease will be greater, requiring permanent anti-inflammatory pain relievers that can be expensive.
3. Diabetes Mellitus. The Obesity is a well known factor in the development of diabetes, due to insufficient insulin produced in the pancreas and insulin resistance occurring. Unfortunately once your pet develops diabetes is not curable, and must accept the responsibility to one or two daily insulin injections for the rest of the lives of their pets. Much better to avoid the development of diabetes in the first place, of course!
4. Urinary problems. The obese animals are more likely to suffer from cystitis, which requires veterinary treatment, and blocking the bladder. A blockage of the bladder is common in obese male cats and is a true emergency.
5. Issues giving birth.
6. Skin diseases in non-allergic.
7. Breathing problems.
8. Hepatic lipidosis (fat deposited in the liver). This is a very serious condition that occurs in cats, especially those who lose weight very quickly, or are hungry for more than 5 days.
9. Increased anesthetic risk.
How can I get my pet to lose weight?
1. Take your pet to the vet for a complete physical examination laboratory tests, and an exact weight recorded. The main objective of this visit is to rule out hypothyroidism or other metabolic disorders that can prevent the loss of normal weight.
2. Feed less food than you have been. Simply feed smaller portions.
3. Changing the type of food to a total low-calorie diet. These diets, for example, Hills r / d, provided fewer calories than regular pet foods made in spite of being the portion of the same size. As a result your stomach is full of pets in the same grade and he / she does not feel hungry.
4. Feed pets small portions at intervals rather than continuous free access. If your pet goes outdoors, make sure the neighbors are not feeding him / her.
5. Take your dog longer and more regular trips to burn calories. Increased activity of cats and exercise cats enriching the environment, promote the game.
6. Reweigh your pet at monthly intervals to monitor progress in weight loss. If possible keep a table so you can visualize what you are doing, with the target weight clearly marked. Your veterinarian may suggest an appropriate target weight.
7. Reduce total daily food if you notice weight gain or no weight loss.
8. Once your pet is in an ideal weight, adjust the total amount of food so that your weight remains stable.
