What kit do you need to photograph a wedding?
Unfortunately there is an answer to this. It really is tremendously varied. A I know lots of photographers demand the latest and fastest digital SLR as it is, nothing else will. But that's not the way they were working a few years ago. High speed auto focus is relatively new and some photographers are rebelling against that and pay a small fortune for lenses designed with manual focus in mind, because once you always were.
This was not long ago I was told by many professional photographers never compete with digital film and therefore a waste of time. At that time I had a Mamiya 120 roll film camera and an Olympus digital early camera bag. I ignored the advice of the photographers, who told me there was no future in digital imaging and showed my clients and potential clients. At that time there was a bit of an ongoing discussion for many photographers and writing articles about the digital quality is nowhere near as good as the film. When asked if he was going to shoot your wedding in digital or film, he replied that it was his choice and showed them the results of my work in both chambers from side to side. 100% elected on 4 megapixel digital medium format film. I never looked back. Interestingly I recently found myself defending from friends who have opted to stay with film. What does not work for them and although I would not myself I can see why it is good for certain business models and photographers determined. Digital is not necessarily easier or cheaper than film.
My personal opinion is in relation to the cameras that go to medium and high end digital SLR cameras are more than able to provide the basic tool for photographing a wedding. I do not want to talk now about what needs know to successfully photograph a wedding because that issue is not a rehearsal. The short version is a good couple of seasons wedding photography. Then there is the transformation, digital imaging, design albums, presentation, promotion wedding service. The book will have to come later.
So let's do this simply and pretend that the grays are actually black and I will talk more about my personal preferences now and how he would build a camera bag from the beginning, if only I had money and my knowledge, but not the big pile of equipment now carried. I guess for this scenario to work, we must provide some type of event in which my luggage and camera kit is burned and I have an insurance claim for a new start. The idea fills me with dread, but if he did and I, here's what probably would:
First get a hammer and flashgun batteries - Metz or Quantum
Then a few camera bags - one large for upload team throughout an entire day together, like a Lowepro Commercial AW or similar. Also a smart backpack, or a Lowepro Bilingham and some quilted handbags, and the Billingham Hadley or one type of Tamrac shoulder.
Manfrotto Tripods and Monopods. A very big tripod, a standard and a monopod.
All above is quite simple but now stars complicated.
Lenses. I'd like a variety, from fisheye to about 300 mm, a macro and a lensbaby for fun. Not necessarily take all lenses with me to every job. Will vary depending on what the place offers. The macro is unlikely to be with me at night. There is a strong argument for major goals, but the lenses are heavy and have to think about how useful it can be once carrying a number of them, so maybe a prime lens under the photo light level and the differential approach, the macro a cousin and also the focus fisheye and then the other zooms, or going to be like a camel broken.
Personally I am very interested in the new 18-200mm telephoto. When you work fast, can do much with one of they. You may be in a small area organizing a family group picture at the end of 18 mm, but then if you are waiting for a person to fill the group can do headshots of all with the same zoom lens for 200, while you're waiting.
Camera body: Anything that works. Something nice that fits the above, speaking politely to my flashgun and has a good feeling to it.
So some cards - CF probably some professionals with wide critical acclaim, the rescue software and a support line 24 hours.
After that it's really just toys. I like controls autometers distance and at this time. I also have a TOP Silent-snap-shot final and between Autometer and chamber of silence, we have some great pictures in the churches where pictures during the service were not allowed to base it click flashing can be distracting. Because the camera does not blink in silence or clicks, we think are doing something good for the church and the couple as getting a good record of events, where they were told there would be no.
What to bring with you when you are photographing?
Or what it would take if he were starting from scratch or building your camera bag invented?
